this picture was sent to me…..I have no further information, but would love to know more! Somehow it does not strike me as a great idea. Any information would be much appreciated.

I made a similar one for a client using two cut up metal mouthpieces. It played horrible. Sent from my iPhone > On Mar 26, 2017, at 11:41 AM, STEVE GOODSON saxgourmet@... We tested this with and without the divider. Epoxy was used to assemble the pieces. The issue is that both reeds are part of the same air column producing the same standing wave. The reeds must vibrate at the same frequency. To do this you need to balance your embouchure just right or one of the reeds will shut off and it will play as a single reed mouthpiece. So you can barely play a sick sounding honk with both reeds vibrating. Any effort to sculpt the sound makes one of the reeds shut off. > On Mar 26, 2017, at 12:01 PM, Keith Bradbury kwbradbury@... On a "double reed" instrument, both reeds seldom vibrate at the same time. One reed vibrates, one doesn't (or vibrates very little), and acts like the baffle of a mouthpiece. Or so learned double reed players tell me. Paul C.

It seems to me that some kind of adapter for a bassoon or oboe reed would work, although it would require a proper chamber. Re this kind of inter-species mouthpiece exchange, Eddie Harris experimented with a saxophone-type mouthpiece on a trumpet; and also vice-versa. I've seen one of the saxophone mouthpieces for trumpet. It was specialized. The chamber and area under the baffle was small - consistent with the amount of volume in a trumpet mouthpiece. It takes some time to learn note voicing on one reed, so it is perhaps presumptuous to assume that the mind/muscle connections and years of muscle memory development of the lower lip could be instantly transferred to the upper. One would need to train the upper embouchure half to the same extent and then learn to use them together - a real double reed embouchure. That would be no small accomplishment.
