SUBJECT: Forming a concave baffle
Hi Everyone, I know this might sound stupid, but I am having trouble with forming a concave baffle on a clarinet mouthpiece. I almost get a good baffle but then I somehow screw the shape up and I just end up scraping deeper and deeper the more I try to get a good shape. The baffle is really low now. Does anyone have any reliable techniques for forming a concave baffle? Cheers, Harim Oh

It is simple enough to file a flat baffle. Then use coarse sandpaper instead of files. If 110 grit works too fast for you and overshoots what you want, use 220 and go slower. My sanding sticks are useful for all types of shaping and finishing inside the chamber. Get them or make something similar for yourself. From: "harim0suprem0@... It would seem to me that a small piece of wood shaped like the concave contour will help. can be used as a form to shape concave shape. Just an idea! It would probably be much easier to make such a template from epoxy putty. On a concave shape, the edges/corners of sandpaper will scratch hard rubber deeper than the actual sanding surface. I use a 1" long strip of 1/8" leather glued to an old file and load it up with whatever grade lapidary abrasive (fine, pre-polish, polish) needed. Works on concave side walls too. I agree with Steve, the wood would be harder to form, unless you can use a round or half round wood dowel of the appropriate size.
