SUBJECT: Baffle work
HI, I have managed to reface my piece but looking at the mouthpiece 'insides.' I have noticed that the baffle which was quite prominant has now ebbed to an almost cavity type of baffle. The sound quality has also deteriorated quite dramatically and I'm very sure it is due to the lack of baffle. Can anybody help me on how to get my baffle back? is it possible and how do I go about doing it. Thanks in advance, R

You had to think of that in advance. It is much easier to take away than to add up. Now you have to add some material to create projection. I suggest epoxy. Build up the baffle using something like modelling putty and experiment until you have a baffle that works OK. Then replicate it using something like epoxy putty for permanence. The mouth does not come into contact with the baffle, so there shouldn't be any toxicity issues. If you build the baffle slightly over-dimension you'll have a bit of wriggle-room for final shaping. Can you recommend a good epoxy and should the baffle a small one as I have not removed much of the original baffle. just enough to make the tone very bad. I'm in Australia, and I presume that you are elsewhere. The types and brands that I'm familiar with probably don't exist where you are. For what it's worth, I use Selleys Epoxy Putty. As to the size, with having seen the original I've no idea where you're at. Use your own judgement when you build the temporary trial baffle and test-play frequently. Good luck. Tony F. I use "plumber's epoxy". You can get a small roll of black epoxy putty that comes in a tube. You open it, cut off the amount you want, and knead it together. The putty is in two separate parts, both black, with one part on the outside, the other on the inside. But first use a removable material to determine the size, shape, and position of the desired baffle. Let the putty begin to harden, and shape with the end of a flat blade screwdriver or other tool to use as a small spatula. Use water to lubricate it, preventing the epoxy from sticking to the tool, but not hurting the epoxy in any way. Let the epoxy thoroughly cure, or you will really mess up your files. The file you use to do final shaping will require frequent cleaning with a "file card", which is a large flat wire brush. Wipe the file across it at an angle in both directions to clean the crosscut grooves. Also, I have found that almost all epoxy putty is made by Oatey, regardless of the label. "Steel Putty", Quik Steel, and other brands, are metal filled epoxy putties that come out a gray color. I use these on metal mouthpieces. But the black putty works great, looks good on hard rubber.
