Sandpaper + glass/feeler gauges + practise. Get a bunch of the cheapest mouthpieces possible to wreck on your way to figuring it out.

I already have all the bits. just can't work out how to make a decent curve. like in the band book it seem that my curve is starting way to close to the tip. If the curve starts too close to the tip, remove material so that it starts farther from the tip. It takes lots and lots and lots of practice. Also, it helps a lot to have a teacher. Do you have a facing curve target for the tip opening and each of your feeler gauges? As you work on the facing, does it get closer to your targets? Do you keep adjusting until you reach your targets? How close? When you measure a facing curve several times, do you get the same numbers? How close? > On Apr 21, 2015, at 12:43 PM, rogcros@... I dont really have a target , I try to make it playable at around .100. So , I open up the tip via sandpaper then try to make the rails flat after I open it up. I test the rails starting at.0015 which is wher the curve starts then try and corect rails using the feeler sizes below my feelers are .0015 .002 .004 .006 .008 .010 .015 Am I doing something wrong?

I would say so. If you do not have a destination, any map will do. Seems like you have looked at most of the resources available to you. I'm not sure why you are not following the recommended steps. SUBJECT: Re: Putting a Curve on that facing
A facing length of 40 mm is way too long for tenor sax. Facing length, as measured with the .0015" feeler ("one and a half thousandths") should be about 24 mm for a medium length facing (a "48" on most glass gauges). For most facings, the next feeler should be the .010" and be 5 mm shorter, or 19 mm (38 on the glass gauge). The .015" (I use a .014", but it won't make any difference) will be another 2mm shorter, or 17 mm (34 on the glass gauge). Your .002" through .008" feelers are not really useful other than perhaps substituting the .002" for the .0015" feeler in order to use a little more durable feeler. It will give practically the same reading as the .0015". The same is true of the .008" and .010". They are so close as to not be useful. You need also a .024" or .025" feeler, .031" (some use .034" or .035"), .048" (or .050"), .063", .078", .094". These will work for most clarinet, soprano sax, alto, tenor and baritone sax mouthpieces. You might also want .108" and .120" for working on larger tenor and bari mouthpieces. Make sure of your glass guage. Is it marked in mm's or in half mm's? Use a ruler to check. Does 10 on the gauge measure as 10 mm or 5 mm? Paul C.

SUBJECT: Re: Putting a Curve on that facing
Hi Paul, I have looked again and the facing lenght is : 27mm as glass gague goes up in 1mm increments. You half the number? The feelers seem to be bang on target , thanks to you I have adjusted. Here are the readings with your new sizes 27 (0015)20 (010)13 (.025)12 (.030)10.5 (.030)8 (.050)6 (.065) bit dodgy with 4 feelers these are the best readings I can get due to the size of my feelers. The facing seems bang on' laying flat on the lines. The only problem is I cant get a good reading of the tip size. The piece is sounding good now, thanks. Do I need to adjust the baffle , have you got any tips? I have always wanted to learn how to adjust the baffle to get the perfect sound. Thanks , Roger Here On Wednesday, April 29, 2015 12:03 PM, "tenorman1952@... [MouthpieceWork]" <MouthpieceWork@yahoogroups.com> wrote: A facing length of 40 mm is way too long for tenor sax. For more common tip openings it is long, and I consider 22 mm as medium. I keep a notebook on mouthpieces I reface, customer's name, mouthpiece specifics (model, type, facing number, etc), a "before" measurement, and an "after" measurement. Paul C.

I do not get accurate measurements with "stacked" feelers. Try to get the correct feelers, or ones close. For example, a .0015" or .002", either will work fine for facing length, with the .002" being more durable but measuring perhaps 0.5 - 1 mm shorter. Not a big deal is you are aware of it. (metric equivalents 0,04 and 0,05 mm) For the seconds feeler, .010" (or metric equivilent 0,25mm). For the third feeler, .014" or .015". (0.35 mm or 0,4 mm) These will give almost identical measurements. For the fourth feeler, .024" or .025". (0,6 mm) These will give almost identical measurements. .048" - .050" (1.2 mm) These will give almost identical measurements. .063" (1.6 mm) .077" or .078" (2.0 mm) .094" (2.4 mm) You could probably also use 2.5 mm, but 2.5 mm (.098") is a popular tip opening for tenor, and you could not the the feeler measurement just short of the tip. Thanks again , I tried to follow your guide for tip openings for .100 , and now i have lost it. All the numbers including the 1st .0015 have gone haywire. Now it is all over the place an I can't get back to the 1st post. The peice looks good but that's it , jeez! Totally depressing,Roger On Thursday, April 30, 2015 2:24 PM, "tenorman1952@... Try taking a little off the table, as you would flattening the table, until you have all readings shorter than the list I gave, then start over. Paul

Sounds like your table became convex and now your glass gauge is rocking depending on where you place your thumb holding it. Check for table flatness with a straight edge (edge of a thick feeler usually works). PayPal as "Personal, Friend or Family" to: sabradbury79@... Checks made out to "Keith W. As for stacked feelers, I had to stack two for the .034 feeler and taped them tightly together. I measured each side with my micrometer and one side was perfect, the other side not. So...there is a red mark on the correct side. Same masking tape for 12 years! Dave

One suggestion is to use a pencil to mark the rails of the mouthpiece. You could mark the rails as an example at your first station ie. 50. The .0015 spot. Once you have this measurement happening then use the pencil to show this is done. You can mark the area of 50 and more on the rails. As you work on the next station say. .010 make sure you don't remove any pencil marks or you are undoing your work. Devise your own system. In my experience I have found that obtaining the feel for what part of the curve you are working on exactly is difficult. The pencil helps. I have also dabbled with using rollers as a guide getting a curve. Will Grizzle suggested it and said it came from Johnston. You can use drill bits of certain diameters (non cutting portion). and place one under the table of the mouthpiece. Roll it back and forth. I used maybe 5 or 6 of these and some needle springs for a few stations furthest from the tip. Sent from my iPhone

Lastly thanks all for the comments. I am still struggling to get to the 1st mark at .0015. Roger On Saturday, May 2, 2015 1:42 PM, "john price john_w_price33@... Hi Roger, What measurement are you getting with the .0015" feeler gauge?
