This sounds like an inordinate amount of difficult work, in the hope of not altering the mouthpiece's internal geometry any further - or actually, of restoring it to some semblance of its presumed original glorious state. (Perhaps this is not too hard for a certain someone with a TIG welder, though :) Inordinate, especially since this person is asking for a relatively small change in the facing. Taking the table down a little will reduce the mouthpiece volume a little - probably insignificantly. This could be made up in other ways, I suppose (for example, perhaps lengthening the window, especially if it's been shortened.) How much material has already been taken away from the original piece? How much length has the mouthpiece lost? (How far is it now from its original internal and external dimensions? Who can tell exactly how much, in any case?) Would it make more sense to add an extension at the shank? Barry Levine On 2014-12-31 7:58 am, kwbradbury@... [MouthpieceWork] wrote: > How would you go about doing this job? Sorry the photo did not come through. I'll try again. I was looking at the job as if the mouthpiece was unusable as-is. This may not be the case though. From: "barrylevine barrylevine@... One picture is worth a thousand words. Or one: Yuck. I see why he wants to rebuild the tip, so much material has been taken off. On 12/31/2014 7:14 PM, Keith Bradbury kwbradbury@... Not all mouthpieces are repairable, or put another way, this one is not worth the effort to fix it unless you wanted to do it for yourself for the experience. I was once sent a mouthpiece that the tip opening had been decreased, and the facing shortened, by milling the table. The kink in the curve was not smoothed out, just an abrupt kink. It was not a matter of refacing, as that would have put the tip up into the cutout for the teeth insert. Just not possible. Adding metal back would have required brazing or soldering (plumbing solder, lead free) a slab of brass back on the table. Still, the facing was messed up. The effort involved was just too much, I could have spent a week working on it and still not had a playable mouthpiece. No wonder the customer bought that Link so cheap. Would make a nice paperweight, that's all. When it is this bad, just buy another mouthpiece and be done with it. Paul C.

That would involve rebuilding the rails too, all the way back to the table, provided there is enough table left to work with. It's easier to make a new mouthpiece from a rod of solid brass. ------------------------------ On Wed, Dec 31, 2014 4:56 PM PST Barry Levine barrylevine@... Cut off the tip at the end of the biteplate cavity. Silver solder a piece of brass on to replace it. File it to shape. Depending on how bad the facing and the table are you may need to add more, even as Lance says all the way up to the table. Did this once to restore a NY Double Ring Link. It was about twice as much work as making one from scratch. But if the piece is valuable enough after disclosing the extent of the work done to make it worth your time, OK. I for one don't anticipate ever doing it again.

do you think a mouthpiece would retain its value after such extensive repair and modification? It would seem to be impossible to fairly represent it as "original" On Jan 2, 2015, at 11:58 AM, "frymorgan@... It'll retain some of its value. Obviously you have to be clear about what work was done and the market will decide the price, same as anything else.

Mind you a piece for which this is necessary has lost all value already.
