Mouthpiece Work / new glass gauges
FROM: frymorgan ()
SUBJECT: new glass gauges
Hi Guys-- A couple months ago I broke my last LAW glass gauge. They were great because the lines were tapered the same as most mouthpiece windows making it much easier to align than the old Babbitt or Morgan style with two lines in the center. I've made one to replace it, but to do it really well I'll need to buy some precision ground glass to make sure the angles are all right (I always preferred the gauge to go to the edge, rather than the offset style). It makes more sense to get many of these, which means many more blanks than I will ever need, So I thought if some of you need/want another gauge or two, . So, is there any interest in a gauge like this? They would be £20 + shipping from England. Also considering making them from borosilicate (Pyrex) glass, which is more scratch resistant but may be overkill and would cost an additonal £8 per. cheers Morgan

Uploaded a drawing of the gauge to the files section in misc. other files.

Pyrex would be worth the extra cost to me if that's still on the table... AORN Pyrex is still on the table, but I'll have to make a decision to go with one or the other. Still trying to gather a consensus over on SOTW as to whether it's worth the extra expense.

Borosilicate glass (Pyrex is one brand name) is only like 10% harder if that. Not worth a premium price for this application IMO. > On Dec 19, 2013, at 9:54 AM, Matthew Voss <matthewvossjazz@...> wrote: > > Pyrex would be worth the extra cost to me if that's still on the table... > > >> On Thu, Dec 19, 2013 at 9:42 AM, Matthew Voss <matthewvossjazz@...> wrote: >> I also use the LAW so I would def. buy another one or two. >> >> Thanks Morgan. >> >> >>> On Thu, Dec 19, 2013 at 5:42 AM, <frymorgan@yahoo.com> wrote: >>> >>> [Attachment(s) from frymorgan@... included below] >>> Hi Guys-- >>> >>> A couple months ago I broke my last LAW glass gauge. Thanks, Keith, very good to know.

If I'm not mistaken, you can buy hundreds of microscope slides for the cost of a gauge. Microscope slides are available in thousands of sizes, compositions, and refractive indices... IMHO, it only makes sense to apply the work of the etching and inking to the best material for the job. What that material is, is up for grabs. ________________________________ From: "frymorgan@..." <frymorgan@...> To: MouthpieceWork@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, December 19, 2013 10:32 AM Subject: Re: [MouthpieceWork] new glass gauges AORN Pyrex is still on the table, but I'll have to make a decision to go with one or the other.
