The free audio file editing program, Audacity, has the ability to compute a fast Fourier transform (FFT) of a segment of a digital recording and display it. You can capture it using contol-printscreen and paste that into a photo or "paint" program to save it.

The problem with Audacity is that it is likely to load up your computer with crap that you won't want.

Good suggestion.

I use Audacity, but I never had a problem with it
installing other crapware, unless things have changed. This might be a
function of where you get it. For example, CNET.com makes you download
their own installer-downloader program, which then wants to install crap
as well as the desired application. Get Audacity directly at
audacity.sourceforge.net.

RE screen capture, Gadwin Printscreen is
free, and very handy. (gadwin.com) Lets you capture just a portion of
the screen and save it to the clipboard and/or in a number of graphic
formats. It announces its presence at startup, otherwise resides quite
inoffensively.

If you're interested as well in software for assisting
the transcribing solos or tunes, "Transcribe!" (www.seventhstring.com)
displays the frequency spectrum of a selected segment of an audio file.
The frequency axis is denoted by a keyboard, reasonably enough). It has
other useful functions (looping, exporting individual segments of a
file, speeding or slowing playback, key transposition). A paid program,
but a VERY useful tool for musicians. Not free, but not expensive.

Ialso avoid Cnet. I think the best source of clean downloads is http://www.majorgeeks.com, which warns you about attempts to include crapware and how to avoid them.

Thanks, Barry.

You're correct in that my "polluted" Audacity installation file was
recently downloaded --and I was not careful to select the source.
