Mouthpiece Work / Backing up Yahoo Groups

SUBJECT: Backing up Yahoo Groups
I am a moderator on a number of Yahoo Groups. I received this note from one of the site owners: ---- Paul - thinking we should have backups of the Yahoo Group. Yahoo Corporate just pulled the plug on their Delicious Bookmarking and there is some rumble that any other services not paying their way are being looked at. I found http://www.pgoffline.com/index.htm for $25 to do it - wondering if there are other ones out there. ---- I don't have full access to any of the groups I moderate. Can anyone tell me how to go about this? Paul C.

I use Adobe Acrobat to make backups of complete web sites. The File>Create PDF>From Web Page menu command plus the "Get Entire Site" option will do it. There are also utilities that down load entire web sites. I haven't tried these, but I found: http://www.httrack.com/ http://www.spadixbd.com/backstreet/ which are free and: http://www.surfoffline.com/ which has a 30-day trial. Are any of these backup services smart enough to backup everything? Do they save all the message posts, files and links? ________________________________ From: jkorchok <jkorchok@...> To: MouthpieceWork@yahoogroups.com Sent: Fri, December 17, 2010 10:05:46 AM Subject: [MouthpieceWork] Re: Backing up Yahoo Groups I use Adobe Acrobat to make backups of complete web sites. As I mentioned, I haven't tried out any of these but Acrobat. They're free, so you only have time to lose to try them out :-) John --- In MouthpieceWork@yahoogroups.com, Keith Bradbury <kwbradbury@...> wrote: > > Are any of these backup services smart enough to backup everything? Do they > save all the message posts, files and links? > > > > > ________________________________ > From: jkorchok <jkorchok@...> > To: MouthpieceWork@yahoogroups.com > Sent: Fri, December 17, 2010 10:05:46 AM > Subject: [MouthpieceWork] Re: Backing up Yahoo Groups > >  > I use Adobe Acrobat to make backups of complete web sites. There are a few freely available perl scripts that can be used to backup yahoo groups. When I first joined this group a couple of years ago, I wanted to catch up on all of the previous messages so that I could fully understand the conversation moving forward. I started by going through the yahoo website, but found this to be a really bad interface for reading that many messages. I think there were 4000 or so posts at the time. I used this perl script to download all of the messages: http://www.tt-solutions.com/en/Products/yahoo2mbox The advantage was that it put the messages in a format where they could easily be imported into my normal mail reader. This made them really convenient to read, search, and organize(threading). I think that backing up the site using something similar to this is much better than backing it up by capturing the html. If there was any sort of problem with yahoo, recreating the groups on yahoo or another hosting service would be VERY difficult using html as a starting point. -Walter Hoehn On Dec 17, 2010, at 9:11 AM, Keith Bradbury wrote: > > Are any of these backup services smart enough to backup everything?
