I've tried a wide variety of small files from numerous sources, and am  
not totally satisfied with any of them. I would appreciate any  
suggestions as to brands to try which are SHARP and make a FINE cut.

Jeweler friend of mine suggests these guys.  I haven't tried them yet but she swears by them.

I use Valtitan files.  Mostly the half round, square and barette shapes in 00 and 0 cuts.  They last a long time, even on stainless steel.  There are a couple links to them in the Links Tools section on the MouthpieceWork site:
