I'm probably going a bit off topic with this but I prefer the 6" wide
Starrett's.  They're easier to read and in my opinion they are easier
to get a good reading.

I bought mine from a machine shop that went out of business.  I think
I paid about $100 for a 6".  I also have a 4" Craftsman for smaller
pieces.
