I have already contacted Babbitt and got a reply. But I have not placed an
order yet so I can still accept a few more.

Babbitt says they are willing to process this group order "this one time".
They do not have the number we need in stock. It will be several weeks
before delivery.

I have decided to take a few days to see if I can find someone who will
make the guages for us. The quantity is high enough that I think it can be
economical to not go through Babbitt. But I have not burned any bridges
yet.

Hi Keith,
if you find someone who will make the gauges which are qualitative
enough and not expensiver than Babbitt, I would like to order 2 or 3
of them with zero at the edge. How much will it cost with s/h to
Russia? I can pay through Western union.

I just recently joined this forum
while looking around, I discovered
the instructions to make the glass gauge in the files section under
tools
What a great idea
I made a couple
then came up with a new idea,
instead of using cement
I used Scotch double sided tape 3/4 inch wide
It worked great
and a lot less messy

Several of our members also have excellent glass gauges for sale. Our own group leader, Keith "Mojobari" Bradbury, and David Kulzinski both offer some nice glass gauges. Keith's is glass, David's is acrylic or plexiglass. I have both.

Steve Fowler makes a very nice dial indicator tip opening gauge, but it is also possible to measure tip opening with the glass gauge and a dial caliper.

The most difficult thing is to get feelers in the thicker sizes. One of our members was offering some very nice sets.

But also, Curt Altarac will soon have a good tool kit with all required tools from his Musicmedic.com.

Re plexi or acrylic, a piece chosen for this use should be tested for
flatness; may look flat, but may not be. And it may not stay flat. "Plastic
memory" (internal stresses among the polymerized molecules) may alter the
shape of plastic over time, except for special plastics that are specially
made for precision work.

I sold out of glass gages a while back. I do not plan on getting more. I
barely broke even and donated a lot of time to the effort.

I do still have metal reed sets for use as templates to shape the tip curve
and the table/side rail width.
